Printed pants

One of this summer's musts has been the infamous printed pants, celebrities like Rihanna, Beyonce, Jenna Dewan-Tatum and many, many others being spotted in patterned trousers.

The thing about these pants is that they strongly resemble pajama pants. That was the first thing that popped through my head when seeing them on some woman's legs this spring. Why would someone as rich and stylish as Jessica Alba for instance, go out in her PJ's? Can't she afford a pair of jeans?

But as the weeks passed, more and more people started wearing them and suddenly, my granny's old patterned bottoms didn't seem as ridiculous as before. Kind of. Take for example the lady in the second photo. She is wearing her high-waist floral pants with pointy leopard print shoes. And that in my book, is a big no-no, although she managed to pull it off. But it would have been better if she chose bright yellow pumps, like Beyonce's. It would have complimented well the outfit without over-thinking it.

If you do decide that this trend is for you, there are a few tricks that can help you highlight the best in these crazy leg wear:
    1. Tone the rest of your outfit down. I know, you like colours, so do I, but you must understand that these pants are very eye-catching and must be the central piece of your outfit. Take Beyonce as an example. She wore her loud bottoms with a big print, an unusually challenging piece of clothing, but the rest of her outfit is low key, in order to keep the focus on the pants. She paired them with a black button down, bright yellow pumps that added an unnecessary, but not disturbing, pop of colour and a hot pink belt to tie the outfit together. And she nailed it perfectly.
    2. Don't add more colours. Look at your pants. Look at their colours. Now, the rest of your outfit must be in the same range of colours as your bottoms. Take Rihanna for example, whose whole outfit is of a grayish blue, or Jessica Alba's, whose blouse, shoes and coat compliment her trousers, instead of shadowing them.
     3. Don't over-accessorize. You're not Demi Lovato. Don't get me wrong, I love the girl, she's one of the most talented singers out there, but Demi, honey, easy with the bling. Loading up with chunky arm wear and cocktail rings will only make you look cheap.
     4. Be confident. Probably the most important rule of all is to feel comfortable and confident in your skin. Look at Nicki Minaj, she wears what she wears and still it doesn't look so ridiculous on her as it would on Jennifer Garner, for insatnce.

Here are some patterned bottoms that I found in my shopping spree that didn't look so terrible in my opinion. 3 out of 4 are from H&M but I swear I'm not paid to advertise them; it's just that they have a lot of cool stuff at affordable prices.

Forever 21 - Cropped Geo Print Trousers -  €19,75
The small and busy pattern will slim you down a couple of pounds.

H&M - Trousers in Blue/Patterned -  €29.99
These are similar to Rihanna's in the caption above. Also, they are the only floral print pair that I liked.
H&M - Trousers in Black -  €24.99
An interesting and unique pattern, but careful: the horizontal lines may make you seem wider than you really are.
H&M - Trousers in Patterned -  €24.99
A dye tie technique that lays under a small leopard print. Edgy and bold, you need  confidence in order to look good in these ones..
